A skutching knife is used in the turning of Flax into linen, by breaking the outer husk on the flax plant after retting and before rippling .

This knife was bashed against the bunch of the flax plants. The better this job was done, the easier the rippling.

This utensil is based upon the one found in York during the Viking Saxon period. This example is made from OAK.
